Josh Emmett was born on March 4, 1985, in Phoenix, Arizona. He studied psychology in college with the intention of going into law enforcement and earned a bachelor's degree in liberal arts at Menlo College.

After his first professional victory, he competed in the West Coast Fighting Championship (WFC) and made his debut on 3 August 2013 against Mike Ryan, winning via guillotine choke in the first round.
Emmett was expected to face Arnold Allen at UFC Fight Night 166 on January 25, 2020. However, Emmett withdrew from the fight, citing an undisclosed injury, and was replaced by Nick Lentz. However, on 9 April, UFC President Dana White announced that the event had been postponed to a future date.
